Before Woody Allen set his sights on becoming the next Ingmar Bergman, he made a fleeting (but largely successful) attempt at becoming the next S.J Perelman. Side Effects, his third and final collection of humor pieces, shows his efforts. These essays appeared in The New Yorker during the late 1970s, as he showed more and more discontent with his funnyman status. Fear not, humor fans-Allen's still funny. He is less manic, however, than in his positively goofy Getting Even/Without Feathers days, and this makes Side Effects a more nuanced read. Woody picks and chooses when to flash the laughs, as in an article discussing UFOs: [I]n 1822 Goethe himself notes a strange celestial phenomenon. "En route home from the Leipzig Anxiety Festival," he wrote, "I was crossing a meadow, when I chanced to look up and saw several fiery red balls suddenly appear in the southern sky. Viņa tēvs dzimis Igaunijā, bet māte - Indijā. Viņi bija misionāri Indijā. Abi gaidīja, ka Hese kļūs par teologu. Viņš gan 1891. gadā sāka mācīties protestantu seminārā, taču tika no tā izslēgts. Arī laicīgā skolā viņam neveicās, tāpēc viņš mācības pameta. Viņš strādāja par grāmatu veikala ierēdni, mehāniķi, pievienojās arī literātu lokam Le Petit Cйnacle. Šajā laikā viņš daudz lasīja un bija nolēmis kļūt par rakstnieku. 1912. gadā viņš emigrēja uz Šveici un 1923. gadā kļuva par Šveices pilsoni. Aspazija īstajā vārdā Johanna Emīlija Lizete Rozenberga, vēlāk Elza Pliekšāne Sidraba šķidrauts Kopoti raksti 3 sēj Kā stāsta pati dzejniece, «Sidraba šķidrauts» rakstīts 1901. un 1902. gadā Slobodskā un jau 1903. gada beigās nodots iestudēšanai Rīgas Latviešu teātri. Taču «māmuļnieki» lugu noraida, baidīdamies iekļūt nepatikšanās darba asā sociālā skanējuma dēļ. Norādījumi par lugas sacerēšanas laiku atrodami ari Jāņa Asara priekšvārdā Aspazijas rakstu pirmajam izdevumam 1904. gadā un kādā Rūdolfa Blaumaņa vēstulē Leontīnei Veserei 1904. gada sākumā, kad viņš apciemo Aspaziju un Raini Jelgavā: «Viņas vīrs un viņa apdzīvoja divas istabas. Viņa lasīja man savu jaunāko lugu. Kad man, tikai trīs cēlienus dzirdējušam, bij jādodas prom un es stāvēju uz ielas, man bij tā, it kā es būtu nokritis no debesīm.» (R. Blaumanis. Vēl vairāk — spēcīgais kara nosodījums, Dzelzs jaunavas pils dedzināšana, sarkanais šķidrauts pār skatuvi — tie visi ir tādi drāmas elementi, kas daudziem pēc pirmizrādes 1905. gada 27. janvārī liek domāt, ka darbs radies vistiešākajā vēsturisko notikumu iespaidā. Jaunais Latviešu teātris ar lugas uzvedumu gūst pārsteidzošus panākumus. Kā redzams no recenzijām, tad teātris nespēj dot lugai ne piemērotu skatuves ietērpu, ne arī attiecīgu lomu izpildījumu. Vienīgi Gunas tēlotāja Otilija Muceniece pārliecinoši veic savu uzdevumu. Un tomēr panākumi ir nepieredzēti. Gada laikā lugu uzved divdesmit piecas reizes. Izrādes ikreiz ir izpārdotas, un «Dienas Lapa» dod padomu lauciniekiem, kas lielā skaitā ierodas uz izrādēm, biļetes iegādāties jau iepriekš, lai, tālo ceļu mērojušiem, nebūtu jāpaliek aiz durvīm.
