A review by Victoria Strauss Joe Pitt's a Vampyre. He's been infected by a Vyrus that slows aging, imparts phenomenal strength and sensory abilities, and survives by feeding off its host's blood – which forces its host to go out and drink more blood so the Vyrus can survive. There's a whole Vampyre subculture in New York City, dominated by several powerful Clans – a hidden world of power and violence unsuspected by ordinary human beings. In this secret world, Joe's what's known as a Rogue. Though he was once an enforcer for the politically-minded Society, does occasional strong-arm work for the powerful Coalition, and is the object of periodic recruitment efforts by the mysterious Enclave, he has no fixed Clan alliance. This can be a problem when the freelance jobs dry up, and there's no money to buy the packaged blood that keeps a Vampyre from prowling the streets and ripping people's throats out. To make matters worse, Joe's worried about his girlfriend Evie, whose HIV status is deteriorating and whose medical bills are mounting. Swallowing his pride, he goes to Terry Bird, leader of the Society, and asks for work. As it happens, Terry's got something that needs looking into. There's a growing drug problem in the Vampyre community, some really bad stuff that makes users go crazy – not easy to manage for those infected with the Vyrus, which is solicitous of its hosts and cleans drugs and alcohol out of their systems almost as fast as they go in. Terry asks Joe to find out who's dealing. A little pressure on Joe's favorite snitch turns up a middleman: a trust fund kid in a downtown loft who calls himself the Count. The drug is in bags of fresh, Vyrus-infected blood. Drinking infected blood would kill a Vampyre – but the drug isn't consumed, it's injected. The Count doesn't know what the drug is or why it works, but he does know where it comes from: Uptown, above 110th Street, the area controlled by the Vampyre Clan known as the Hood. This is enemy turf. To reach it, Joe will have to cross Coalition territory, and he's not exactly on good terms with the Coalition either. But Hood thugs and Coalition enforcers turn out to be the least of his problems. A forgotten evil waits in an Uptown mansion, along with a deadly plot that could lead to war among the Clans – unless Joe can survive long enough to figure out who's pulling the strings. Already Dead was gritty and hip, packed with exciting action yet carefully attentive to the nuances of character. No Dominion is even better. The plot is a nonstop, explosively gory thrill-ride whose twists and reversals deliver surprises right up until the end – a true page-turner, impossible to put down. The glimpses of Vampyre culture, a bizarre nighttime world invisible to those who walk in daylight, are both fascinating and chilling, and the vicious complexities of Vampyre politics, where the smallest alteration of the balance could tip the Clans into open conflict, have plenty of real-world resonance. As before, Charlie Huston fills the book with memorable characters – from the bigoted, relentless Vampyre matriarch Maureen Vandewater, to DJ Grave Digga, the charismatic leader of the Hood, to Terry Bird, who combines a post-Woodstock cultural ethos with a Machiavellian mastery of double dealing, to the Count, an amoral Gen-X slacker whose home life is a series of satirical references to Dracula movies ("I hate that self-aware, ironic, pop culture Vampyre shit," Joe tells him at one point). Huston has an amazing ear for dialogue, and endows each of these characters with his or her own distinctive voice. As for Joe, a tough guy's tough guy whose profane, world-weary first-person narration anchors the story, he edges close to noir stereotype, but is saved from actually becoming stereotypical by his very human doubts, and his unflinching recognition of his own moral failings. Huston doesn't neglect the meta-story. Once again, Joe must seek help from the secretive Enclave, which is founded on the belief that the Vyrus is a spiritual force that will ultimately produce a Vampyre savior. Joe's discoveries about the drug may reflect upon that spiritual quest, and also raise disturbing questions about the origins and history of Vampyre society. Hopefully, we'll learn more in the series' next installment. I can't wait

JEAN Paul Sartre's No Exit was first performed at the Vieux-Colombier in May 1944, just before the liberation of Paris. Three characters, a man and two women, find themselves in hell, which for them is a living-room with Second Empire furniture. Each of the characters needs the other two in order to create some illusion about himself. Since existence, for Sartre, is the will to project oneself into the future-to create one's future-the opposite of existence, where man has no power to create his future, his hell. This is the meaning of the Sartrean hell in the morality play No Exit. Garcin's sin had been cowardice, and in hell he tries to use the two women, who are locked up forever with him in the same room, under the same strong light, as mirrors in which he will see a complacent and reassuring picture of himself. This play, an example of expert craftmanship so organized that the audience learns very slowly the facts concerning the three characters, is Sartre's indictment of the social comedy and the false role that each man plays in it. The most famous utterance in the play, made by Garcin, when he says that hell is other people, l'enfer, c'est les autres, is, in the briefest form possible, Sartre's definition of man's fundamental sin. When the picture a man has of himself is provided by those who see him, in the distorted image of himself that they give back to him, he has rejected what the philosopher has called reality. He has, moreover, rejected the possibility of projecting himself into his future and existing in the fullest sense. In social situations we play a part that is not ourself. If we passively become that part, we are thereby avoiding the important decisions and choices by which personality should be formed. After confessing her sins to Garcin, Inès acknowledges her evil and concludes with a statement as significant as Garcin's definition of hell. She needs the suffering of others in order to exist. (Moi, je suis méchante: ça veut dire que j'ai besoin de la souffrance des autres pour exister…) The game a man plays in society, in being such and such a character, is pernicious in that he becomes caught in it. L'homme s'englue is a favorite expression of Sartre. The viscosity (viscosité) of such a social character is the strong metaphor by which Sartre depicts this capital sin and which will end by making it impossible for man to choose himself, to invent himself freely. The drawing-room scene in hell, where there is no executioner because each character tortures the other two, has the eeriness of a Gothic tale, the frustration of sexuality, the pedagogy of existentialist morality. The least guilty of the three seems to be Garcin, and he suffers the most under the relentless intellectualizing and even philosophizing of Inès. At the end of the play, Garcin complains of dying too early. He did not have time to make his own acts. (Je suis mort trop tôt. On ne m'a pas laissé le temps de faire mes actes.) Inès counters this (she has an answer to everything, Garcin is going to say) with the full Sartrean proclamation: "You are nothing else but your life." (Tu n'es rien d'autre que ta vie…) No further argument seems possible after this sentence, and the play ends three pages later when the full knowledge of their fate enters the consciousness of the three characters and Garcin speaks the curtain line: Eh bien, continuous… ("Well, well, let's get on with it…"). This ultimate line which, paradoxically, announces the continuation of the same play, was to be echoed ten years later in the concluding line of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot. The two plays bear many resemblances both structurally and philosophically

Sākot pētījumus, mēs driz vien izstrādājām datorprogrammu acu ģeometrisko parametru analīzei. Šo oftal­moloģijas virzienu nosaucām par oftalmoģeometriju. Mums izde­vās atrast daudz vērtīgu oftalmoģeometrijas izmantošanas iespēju cilvēka personības identificēšanā, tautības noteikšanā, psihisko slimību diagnostikā utt. Bet visinteresantākais bija tas, ka, izana­lizējot visu uz Zemes mītošo rasu pārstāvju fotogrāfijas, mēs iz­skaitļojām cilvēka vidēji statistiskās acis. Tās piederēja tibetiešu rasei. Tad, matemātiski tuvinot citu rasu acis vidēji statistiskajām acīm, aprēķinājām cilvēces migrācijas ceļus no Tibetas, un tie dī­vainā kārtā saskanēja ar vēstures faktiem. Bet pēc tam uzzinājām, ka ikviena Tibetas un Nepālas tempļa vizītkarte ir lielas, nepa­rasti veidotas acis, kas noraugās uz Zemi. Pēc oftalmoģeometri­jas principiem matemātiski apstrādājot šo acu attēlus, mums iz­devās noteikt to īpašnieka izskatu, kas izrādījās visnotaļ neparasts. "Kas tas ir?" es domāju. Sāku studēt austrumu literatūru, bet nekas tamlīdzīgs tur nebija aprakstīts. Tolaik es pat iedomāties nevarēju, ka Indijā, Nepālā un Tibetā šis neparastais cilvēka por­trets uz lamām un svami atstās tik satriecošu iespaidu, ka viņi, ieraudzījuši zīmējumu, izsauksies: "Tas ir Viņš!" Tolaik man ne prātā nenāca, ka šis attēls kļūs par ceļvedi mūsu hipotētiskajos atklājumos par cilvēces dižāko noslēpumu - tās genofondu. Loģiku es uzskatu par visu zinātņu karalieni. Visu savu zināt­nieka mūžu es izmantoju loģisko pieeju, izstrādājot jaunas ope­rācijas un jaunus transplantātus. Arī tajā reizē, kad mēs devā­mies zinātniskā ekspedīcijā uz Himalajiem, līdzi ņemot iepriekš­minēto neparastā cilvēka attēlu, es nolēmu izmantot sev tik ieras­to un vienkāršo loģisko pieeju. Ziņu un faktu juceklis, ko ekspe­dīcijā guvām no lamām, guru un svami, no literatūras un reli­ģiskajiem avotiem, ar loģikas palīdzību sāka izkārtoties secīgā ķēdītē un arvien vairāk un vairāk ļāva apzināties, ka uz Zemes pastāv sava veida dzīvības apdrošināšanas sistēma - Cilvēces genofonds, ko, iekonservējot somati stāvoklī, dažādu civilizāciju ļaudis glabā dziļā zemzemē. Mums pat izdevās atrast vienu no šīm alām un iegūt ziņas par tā dēvētajiem īpašajiem cilvēkiem, kuri turp dodas katru mēnesi. Kā iepriekšminētais zimējums palīdzēja? Vienkārši - ipašie cilvēki ir redzējuši un redz zemzemē neparasta izskata cilvēkus. Un viņu vidū ir arī tāds, kas līdzīgs cilvēkam, kurš attēlots mūsu zīmējumā. Tieši viņu godbijīgi dēvē "Viņš". Kas ir šis Viņš? Es ne­varu precīzi atbildēt, bet domāju, kas Viņš ir Sambalas cilvēks. Lai gan esmu racionāls zinātnieks praktiķis, šobrīd es pilnībā ticu Cilvēces genofonda esamībai. To nosaka loģika un zinātniskie fakti. Taču vienlaikus arī esmu sapratis, ka mūsu ziņkārībai nav lielas vērtēs un mums atļauts tikai pavērt liela noslēpuma priekškaru, bet aptaustīt un nofotografēt iekonservētos cilvēkus diezin vai tuvākajā nākotnē izdosies. Kas mēs esam? Pagaidām vēl nesaprātīgi bērni, salīdzinot ar visaugstāko Zemes civilizāciju - lemūriešiem, kas Cil­vēces genofondu radījuši. Turklāt Cilvēces genofonda likme ir pārāk augsta - būt par jaunu sākotni globālas katastrofas vai uz Zemes esošās civilizācijas pašiznīcināšanās gadījumā. Vēl mums izdevās saprast vārda "āmen" jēgu - to mēs sakām katru reizi, kad pabeidzam lūgšanu. Siš vārds radīts tā dēvētajā pēdējā SoHm vēstījumā. Noskaidrojās, ka mūsu, piekto civilizā­ciju bloķē no Tās Pasaules zināšanām, tāpēc mums jāattīstās pat­stāvīgi. Pēc tam es sapratu, kas ir Izredzēto, piemēram, Nostradama, Helēnas Blavatskas, .zināšanu avots, - viņiem izdevās pārvarēt SoHm principu un iziet Vispārējā informatīvajā laukā, t.i., Tās Pasaules zināšanās. Šai grāmatai ir četras daļas. Pirmajā daļā es īsi runāju par pētnieciskās domas loģiku, sākot ar jautājumu, kāpēc mēs ska­tāmies cits citam acīs, - un beidzot ar tā cilvēka izskata analīzi, kura acis attēlotas uz tibetiešu tempļu sienām. Grāmatas otrā un trešā daļa veltīta faktu materiālam, kas eks­pedīcijas laikā tika savākts no lamām, guru un svami, un galve­nokārt atstāstīts kā sarunas ar viņiem. Dažās nodaļās es pieļauju atkāpes, analizējot literatūras avotus (Helēnas Blavatskas un citus darbus), kā ari atbildu uz dažiem jautājumiem, piemēram, kas bijis Buda un kādas civilizācijas pastāvējušas uz Zemes pirms mums. Grāmatas ceturtā daļa ir vissarežģītākā un veltīta apzināto faktu filozofiskai izpratnei. Taču tieši pēc šīs analīzes bei­dzot sapratu, kāpēc visas pasaules reliģijas vienā balsī runā par labestības un mīlestības nozīmīgumu. Tieši pēc šīs analīzes es sāku patiesi cienīt reliģiju un patiesi ticēt Dievam. Uzrakstot šo grāmatu, es droši vien dažos jautājumos esmu kļūdījies, bet citos, visdrīzāk, jau man ir taisnība. Using the neglected writings and memoirs of Mensheviks like Julius Martov, SRs like Victor Chernov, Bolshevik oppositionists like Alexandra Kollontai and anarchists like Nestor Makhno, it traces a revolution gone wrong and suggests how it might have produced a more libertarian, emancipatory socialism than that created by Lenin and the Bolsheviks. Although the book broadly covers the period from 1903 (the formation of the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks) to 1921 (the suppression of the Kronstadt rebellion) and explains why the Bolshevik Revolution degenerated so quickly into its apparent opposite, it continually examines the Leninist experiment through the lens of a 21st century, de-centralised, ecological, anti-productivist and feminist socialism.
