Wir haben es Schwarz auf Weiß: Es geht uns gut ist der beste deutschsprachige Roman 2005 und der Vorarlberger Arno Geiger bekommt deshalb als erster den neu geschaffenen Deutschen Buchpreis. Dass aber Juryentscheidungen äußerst subjektiv sind, beweist schon die Tatsache, dass Geiger mit dem ersten Kapitel aus eben diesem Familienroman beim Bachmannpreis 2004 die Juroren keineswegs begeisterte und leer ausging. Man muss sich also selbst ein Bild machen — und das ist nach der Lektüre zumindest ambivalent. Das beginnt schon bei der Grundkonstellation: Die Hauptfigur Philipp, ein 36-jähriger Schriftsteller, erbt das Haus seiner Großmutter und beginnt es auszuräumen. Statt sich für die Hinterlassenschaft und die Familiengeschichte (eigentlich wertvoller Stoff für jeden Schriftsteller) zu interessieren, schmeißt er alles weg. Eingestreut in die Aufräumaktion dieses Familienerinnerungsverweigerers wird dann aber doch in Rückblenden, anhand einzelner Tage von 1938 bis 1989, eben dessen Familiengeschichte — Großeltern, Eltern, die eigene Kindheit — erzählt. Aus dieser Spannung von Erinnern und Vergessen speist sich der Reiz von Geigers viertem Roman. Mit der Geschichte einer ganz normalen Wiener Familie versucht er sich an einer literarischen Schilderung von Alltag, die weitgehend ohne dramaturgische Spannungslinien auskommt. Etwa wenn in einer der Rückblenden die verfahrene Ehesituation von Philipps Mutter Ingrid skizziert wird: Doppelbelastung als Ärztin und Mutter, zuwenig Unterstützung vom Gatten, abkühlende Gefühle. So ist das Leben, kann man da nur sagen. Sind so aber auch mitreißende Romane? Auch wenn man Geigers Werk sicher nicht als misslungen bezeichnen kann, bleibt er doch weit hinter dem zurück, was andere Autoren — man denke beispielsweise nur an Jonathen Franzens Korrekturen — aus diesem Genre sprachlich und inhaltlich herausgeholt haben. Auch aus dem grauen Familienalltag lassen sich literarische Funken schlagen. Ein Familienroman, der über 60 Jahre österreichischer Geschichte sozusagen als Bühnenbild benutzt, lebt natürlich auch vom Lokalkolorit. Das verleiht Charme, wird aber sprachlich so manche Leser überfordern, weil es der Verlag versäumt hat, die zahlreichen Austriazismen im Anhang zu erklären. Nicht-Österreicher werden kaum wissen, dass "Pantscherl" einen Seitensprung bezeichnet, oder was "urgestopft", "angelehnt lassen", oder "hoppadatschig" bedeuten. Eine nette Herausforderung auch für Übersetzer, wenn der Roman den Erfolg im Ausland haben wird, den der Deutsche Bücherpreis verheißt. Für die deutschsprachige Literatur aber bedeutete dies, wäre das wirklich der beste Roman des Jahres: Es geht uns nicht gut. -Christian Stahl

Immer mehr beginnt er an dem Sinn dieser Nichteinmischung zu zweifeln…
