Asumiendo todas las coordenadas del cuento de hadas (la maldición nacida de lo prohibido, la fuga y la persecución, la presencia de la infancia incomprendida, la búsqueda del amor imposible, la aparición de seres de leyenda y los hijos habidos entre éstos y los hombres, la guerra y la crueldad, el paisaje indómito y la ambientación de época medieval), Matute nos cuenta la historia de Aranmanoth, hijo natural del Señor de Lines y de un hada del agua, que recibe un encargo que contiene la semilla de la pérdida de su inocencia: proteger y custodiar a la mujer de su padre, una niña como él. Entre ellos fragua una amistad, camaradería más bien, que no es sino el trasunto de todos los cuentos que en el mundo han sido: el cambio, la pérdida de referentes para una infancia atrapada en un mundo adulto -violento y corruptor- que no está hecho a su medida y al cual acabarán enfrentándose tarde o temprano. Y de ahí deriva la hermosura de este cuento. Windumanoth, Mes de las Vendimias, ha perdido el Sur, la cualidad que la distinguía de los rudos moradores de su nuevo hogar, y se encuentra sola en el mundo, sin otra compañía que Aranmanoth, Mes de las Espigas, que no es ni humano ni otra cosa, pero a quien la edad y el devenir inexorable de los acontecimientos obligan a acercarse a su condición menos favorecedora: la de ser humano. Aranmanoth y Windumanoth huyen del mundo adulto y frío buscando el Sur, el mítico Sur que simboliza la infancia perdida y el calor y el sol. En el camino perderán las ilusiones y adquirirán el conocimiento de un hecho: el Sur es una condición, no un lugar. Un paisaje interior inmune al externo. Amarga y hermosa, Aranmanoth pudiera parecer un inocente cuentito en comparación con la más ambiciosa Olvidado rey Gudú o la decididamente pretenciosa La torre vigía, pero no hace sino plasmar con más crudeza que en ninguna de las obras de Ana María Matute el eterno conflicto entre los deseos y la realidad, entre la voluntad y la renuncia. Obra menor si se quiere, pero no por ello menos recomendable, nos devuelve el placer por la lectura de los cuentos infantiles y al mismo tiempo se erige en uno de los libros fantásticos españoles más bonitos de los últimos años. Zmęczony dość uciążliwymi w przyswajaniu lekturami szkolnymi oraz nieco ambitniejszą fantastyką, jakiś czas temu poczułem silną potrzebę sięgnięcia po coś lekkiego i nie wymagającego zbytniego zaangażowania umysłowego, a do tego na tyle rozluźniającego, bym mógł z nowymi siłami wrócić do poważniejszej literatury. Fabryka Słów stanęła na wysokości zadania i wypuściła na rynek pierwszą część Arcymaga, który wyszedł spod pióra jeszcze nieznanego u nas rosyjskiego fantasty, Aleksandra Rudazowa. Ponieważ opis z tyłu okładki – zabawny i oryginalny – wydał mi się zachęcający, bez zbędnego wahania chwyciłem za wspomniane dzieło. Jak się wkrótce okazało, była to jedna z moich najtrafniejszych decyzji od przynajmniej kilku miesięcy, jeśli chodzi o dobór lektury. Fabuła okazuje się dość oryginalna. Aby uciec od swych przeciwników, sumeryjski arcymag Kreol decyduje się na wielce ryzykowny krok – wraz ze swym filigranowym dżinem-sługą ukrywa się w grobowcu i zapada tam na długi, bo trwający aż pięć tysięcy lat, sen. W ten sposób, a także dzięki wyprawie archeologicznej, która odkryła jego miejsce spoczynku, budzi się we współczesnym San Francisco. Jako że przeżycie w naszych realiach bez jakichkolwiek informacji jest niewątpliwie sporym wyczynem, nasz bohater ochoczo przyjmuje pomoc tutejszej młodej policjantki, napotkanej w dość niespodziewanych okolicznościach. Teraz Kreol ma szansę zadomowić się w nowych czasach, jednak szybko okazuje się, że jego wrogowie wcale nie zniknęli w mrokach dziejów. Powieść okazała się tak bardzo wciągająca, że na jej pochłonięcie wystarczyło mi jedno popołudnie. Co ciekawe, fabuła nie ma w tym pierwszorzędnej zasługi, albowiem ta jeszcze nie zdążyła się rozkręcić i jak na razie obyło się bez fajerwerków. Nic w tym dziwnego, skoro recenzowana przeze mnie pozycja to dopiero pierwsza z dwu części Arcymaga (a znając ostatnie tendencje Fabryki Słów do cięcia powieści na połówki, należy sądzić, iż w oryginale autor ograniczył się do jednej książki). Jednak w żadnym razie nie znaczy to, że było nudno. Zderzenia dwóch kultur czy dwóch światów zawsze dawało autorowi spore pole do popisu. Kreol – człowiek bardzo inteligentny, a do tego – dzięki profesji arcymaga – nawykły do wszelkich cudów czy pozornych niemożliwości, nie ma większych problemów ze zrozumieniem naszej rzeczywistości i przyjmuje ją bez skrajnych emocji, co stanowi miłą odmianę od wszelkiej maści "tryglodytów" z innych powieści fantastycznych, nieustannie dziwiących się każdej nowej rzeczy. Paradoksalnie ten powiew świeżości wcale nie pozbawił autora narzędzia do tworzenia śmiesznych scen, lecz jedynie uatrakcyjnił lekturę. Ogromną zaletą Arcymaga są bohaterowie. Duża część z nich to istoty z innych światów, jak chociażby wspomniany już wcześniej zabawny dżin Hubaksis, inni są ludźmi. Jednak każdy z nich jest znakomicie wykreowany, dzięki czemu od razu można go zapamiętać i polubić. To szczególnie oni, wraz z ich dążeniami, kłopotami oraz wadami i zaletami powodowali, że z taką przyjemnością pochłaniałem wzrokiem kolejne strony powieści. Innym walorem tej pozycji jest świat przedstawiony, wspaniale ożywiony magią. Mamy więc do czynienia z prawdziwym magiem, artefaktami, nawiedzonymi domami oraz istotami z innych wymiarów. Opis wydawcy z tyłu okładki obiecuje nam także podróże po innych rzeczywistościach. Nie jest to do końca prawdą, gdyż żadnych podróży międzywywiarowych na razie nie uświadczymy. Piszę "na razie", ponieważ biorąc pod uwagę moment, w jakim doszło do urwania akcji, wygląda na to, że jednak nas nie ominą. Za to cieszy przedstawienie przez autora własnej wizji dziejów starożytnego Bliskiego Wschodu. Nie jest to co prawda zbyt obszerne przedstawienie, ale i tak bardzo dobrze, że się pojawiło, zwłaszcza iż współgra z fabułą. Już to zasygnalizowałem we wstępie, ale nie zaszkodzi powtórzyć: Arcymag jest powieścią wybitnie rozrywkową i tylko jako taką można ją traktować; próżno doszukiwać się tutaj głębszych treści, moralizowania czy nawet naukowych ciekawostek, jakże chętnie dostarczanych w hurtowych ilościach przez wielu naszych rodzimych twórców. Ciężko mi jednoznacznie stwierdzić, co tak naprawdę stanowi humor w tej książce. Na pewno nie pojedyncze scenki lub gry słowne, bo tych jest znikoma ilość. Myślę, że nie było to coś konkretnego, lecz cała powieść jest nim wprost przesycona. To właśnie dzięki bohaterom, historii oraz lekkości opisywanych wydarzeń uśmiech nie schodził mi z ust przez całą lekturę i trwał jeszcze długo po jej zakończeniu. Odniosłem wrażenie, iż pisanie sympatycznej powieści mającej na celu wyłącznie rozluźnić czytelnika, jest dla Rudazowa czymś zupełnie naturalnym, dzięki czemu nie musi co i rusz chwytać się różnych zabiegów, mających na celu rozśmieszenie czytelnika. To wyraźnie odróżnia go od pewnego fantasty rozrywkowego z naszego podwórka, a mianowicie Andrzeja Pilipiuka. Ten ostatni, przy tworzeniu humoru nierzadko sięga po takie narzędzie jak erotyka, zgorszenie albo brutalność (jakkolwiek dziwnie by to nie brzmiało). Każdy, kto miał do czynienia chociażby z Wieszać każdy może, zapewne domyśla się, co miałem na myśli. Wszystkich, których zniechęciła ta cecha prozy Pilipiuka, mogę ze spokojnym sumieniem odesłać do Rudazowa – u niego próżno doszukiwać się podobnych rzeczy. Książka została napisana sprawnie i lekkim piórem. Styl współgra z treścią, toteż na tym polu nie stwierdziłem zgrzytów. Również korekta dobrze wywiązała się z powierzonego jej zadania, gdyż nie zauważyłem istotniejszych błędów językowych, choć trochę pomniejszych się prześlizgnęło. Jeśli chodzi o jakość wydania, to tu – jak to w każdej publikacji Fabryki Słów – widać dobrze wykonaną robotę. Co prawda grafika tytułowego arcymaga na okładce mogłaby być lepsza, ale to już czepianie się szczegółów. Podsumowując, Arcymag jest idealną propozycją dla osób spragnionych lekkiej, rozrywkowej fantastyki. Za rozsądną cenę dostajemy porządnie wydany produkt, który zapewni kilka godzin relaksującego odpoczynku od prozy życia. Gorąco polecam i z niecierpliwością wypatruję drugiej części, która zgodnie z zapowiedziami wydawcy już niedługo powinna trafić do sklepów
