Am Anfang sieht der Planet noch friedlich und unbewohnt aus, und die Mannschaftsmitglieder spekulieren, was wohl mit dem Schwesterschiff passiert ist — bis es aufgefunden wird und sich herausstellt, dass die Besatzung ohne Kampf an einem vollständigen Gedächtnisverlust zugrundegegangen ist. Mit der Zeit wird der Verursacher des Unglücks gefunden: Eine unbekannte Alienspezies. Es handelt sich dabei um Heerscharen kleiner metallischer Roboter-Fliegen, die sich je nach Bedrohung zu Einheiten variabler Größe zusammenschließen und mittels enorm starker magnetischer Felder Gehirne und Rechenanlagen so belasten können, dass diese funktionsunfähig werden, was sich beim Menschen als vollständiger Gedächtnisverlust darstellt. Der Unbesiegbare ist ein Raumschiff mit wissenschaftlicher Abteilung an Bord, in der fast alle Disziplinen vertreten sind — nach umfangreichen, insbesondere geologischen Nachforschungen und vielen Spekulationen scheint die plausibelste Theorie zu sein, dass die Flugroboter im Rahmen einer „toten Evolution“ entstanden sind. Die Maschinen stammen selbst nicht von dem Planeten, sondern wurden „eingeschleppt“ und haben sich weiterentwickelt, wobei sich die unendlich flexiblen Mikrosysteme gegenüber allen anderen Arten, inklusive der lokalen Fauna und Flora, durchgesetzt haben. Als sich herausstellt, dass eine Kommunikation mit dieser „Nekrosphäre“, wie die Wissenschaftler die Roboter-Fliegen-Zivilisation taufen, nicht möglich ist, steht der Kommandant des Unbesiegbaren vor einer schweren Entscheidung: Nach Angriffen auf verschiedene Expeditionen auf dem Planeten werden nach einem schweren Gefecht und einer fast gescheiterten Rettungsexpedition immer noch Besatzungsmitglieder vermisst. Aufgrund eines Berechnungsfehlers bohrt sich das Raumschiff in die Oberfläche des Planeten Eden. Während der Zeit, in der die sechs Besatzungsmitglieder ihr Schiff wieder instand setzen, unternehmen sie einige Expeditionen, und es gelingt ihnen, sich schließlich mit einem der seltsamen Doppelwesen, die diesen Planeten bewohnen, zu verständigen. Mit „Fiasko“ knüpft Lem an jene Phase seines literarischen Schaffens an, die mit Romanen wie „Der Unbesiegbare“ (1967) und „Solaris“ (1972) seine bisher größten erzählerischen Erfolge aufwies. „Fiasko“, ein Buch von grandiosem pessimistischem Zuschnitt, nimmt eine Idee auf, die die intellektuelle Science-fiction bislang gemieden hat: die Möglichkeit der Selbstzerstörung unseres Planeten. The “Back Cover” information for this book is quite misleading. This is only “science fiction” in the most literal sense of the phrase — it is fiction about science. The single fantastical element is only theorized — a Sender of the message in question. The book is cerebral in nature, which makes me question why exactly it is referred to as a “thriller” on the back cover. . though there is a tension in the book, like in most good literature, I would not choose to describe it as a “thriller”. The most thrilling thing about this book is that there exists an author who is willing to explore topics as diverse as psychology, morality, linguistics, physics, mathematics, ethics, and philosophy in one book. This is a more thoughtful, realistic, and rewarding book than others in the same vein such as Sagan’s Contact

It is 1939; the Nazis have occupied Poland. A young doctor disturbed by the fate of Poland joins the staff of an insane asylum only to find a world of pain and absurdity to match that outside. This first novel by the prolific science fiction author and essayist was completed in 1948, but wasn’t published in Poland until 1975, after Lem’s reputation was well established. Appearing in English for the first time, this is very much the work of a brash writer finding his way. As Poland falls to the Nazis during WW II in 1939, Stefan Trzyniecki, a young doctor, finds employment at a provincial insane asylum. He has been lured there by a fellow medical student who promises, “It’s like being outside the Occupation, in fact it’s even like being outside the world!” Stefan hopes that the asylum will be “a kind of extraterrestrial observatory” with “a delicious solitude in which a man naturally endowed with a fine intellect could develop in peace.” But the insanity of the outside world soon intrudes on the madness within. While corrupt and callous doctors perpetrate hideous abuses on mental patients, the Nazis are capturing Polish resistance fighters nearby. When the Nazis move to liquidate the asylum and turn it into an SS hospital, betrayals abound; Stefan survives, but he has been transformed. Lem, who attended medical school in Poland, evokes the monstrosities of an archaic mental institution with the knife-edged clarity of bitterness. The ironies of Stefan’s existence, which are echoed in many ways in Kundera’s recent The Unbearable Lightness of Being , reveal much about how the author found his voice. Stanislavas Lemas gimė Lvovo mieste, tuo metu priklausiam Lenkijai (dabar — Ukrainai), Sabinos Woller ir Samuelio Lemo šeimoje. Lemas buvo žydų kilmės, tačiau auginamas kaip katalikas, o vėliau save laikė ateistu. Lvovo universitete 1939–1941 m. studijavo mediciną. Per Antrąjį pasaulinį karą ir nacių okupaciją Lemas išvengė persekiojimo dėl savo kilmės, nes turėjo netikrus dokumentus. 1946 m. Stanislavas Lemas persikėlė iš Sovietų Sąjungos okupuotos teritorijos į Krokuvą ir tęsė medicinos studijas Jogailos universitete.
