Każdy autor antologii fantastyki naukowej staje wobec problemu określenia jej granic. Fakt, że dotychczas nie znaleziono zadowalającej definicji science-fiction świadczy o tym, że jest ona czymś żywym, rozwijającym się. Przyjmując bardzo szerokie rozumienie fantastyki naukowej włączamy czasem utwory z jej pogranicza, które wydały nam się warte zaprezentowania czytelnikom. Są więc w naszym tomie tacy znani wszystkim miłośnikom fantastyki tytani, jak Ray Bradbury (ze swoją wersją duszy anielskiej więzionej w czerepie rubasznym), autor przeszło stu książek Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Clifford D. Simak i znacznie od nich młodszy Robert Sheckley. Udało nam się zdobyć opowiadanie Stanisława Lema, który — jak niedawno podliczono — jest najbardziej czytanym autorem SF na świecie. Jego twórczość, znana do niedawna głównie w Związku Radzieckim i europejskich krajach socjalistycznych, zaczyna być tłumaczona na Zachodzie, wywołując tam niemałą sensację. Opowiadanie Roberta Silverberga, płodnego autora amerykańskiego, który był najpoważniejszym kontrkandydatem Asimova do ostatniej nagrody Hugo, pochodzi z cyklu o miastach przyszłości — mrowiskach. Kurt Vonnegut jest specjalistą od zadawania trafiających w sedno pytań. Doczekał się on niezwykłego wyróżnienia: w roku ubiegłym prasa doniosła, że dyrekcja jednej ze szkół w Stanach Zjednoczonych nakazała spalenie jego książek. Czyżby chcieli zachęcić wszystkich uczniów do czytania Vonneguta? B. J. Friedman, należący do czołowych autorów amerykańskich, nie był dotychczas wydawany w Polsce. Obok realistycznych powieści pisze opowiadania, w których obserwacja obyczajowa przeplata się z fantazją. Victor Contoski jest znanym amerykańskim poetą i tłumaczem polskiej poezji. Yep i Dixon reprezentują najmłodsze pokolenie pisarzy. Również wśród autorów radzieckich obok dobrze znanego czytelnikom Ilji Warszawskiego przedstawiamy dwóch autorów nowych: Wiaczesława Moroczkę i Michaiła Puchowa. Jeśli chodzi o polskich autorów, Janusz A. Zajdel ma na swoim koncie dwa tomy opowiadań fantastycznych, Andrzej Czechowski wydał przed laty jeden tomik i pisuje niestety bardzo rzadko, Krzysztof W. Malinowski zaś debiutował w ubiegłorocznym wydaniu Kroków w nieznane. Tak więc niniejszy zbiór opowiadań stanowi jakby przegląd nurtów i tendencji światowej i krajowej science — fiction od A (jak Asimov) do Z (jak Zajdel). Większość opowiadań tłumaczonych ukazuje się drukiem po raz pierwszy

Îndepărtându-se de cele narate în primul roman, Înapoi la trupurile voastre răzlețite!, Vasul miraculos urmărește eforturile lui Samuel Clemens (numele real al lui Mark Twain) de a găsi un mod pentru a construi un vapor cu zbaturi într-o loc sărac în metale, cum este Lumea Fluviului. De la un membru al celor responsabili pentru readucerea la viață a omenirii, el află că metalele pot fi găsite în susul fluviului. În căutarea lui, Clemens se aliază cu un viking din secolul al X-lea, Eric Bloodaxe, care deținde o secure făcută din metal și cu un hominid preistoric gigantic, numit Joe Miller. Alt motiv care îl animă pe Clemens să pornească în această călătorie îl reprezintă regăsirea fostei lui soții de pe Pământ, Livy. Pe parcursul călătoriei, ei sunt surprinși de căderea unui meteorit, ale cărui distrugeri sunt apoi reparate miraculos în mai puțin de o zi. Știind că resturile meteoritului conțin metale, pornesc în căutarea lui, alături de un nou personaj, aviatorul german Lothar von Richthofen, un as din Primul Război Mondial și frate al faimosului Red Baron. Neavând încredere în Bloodaxe, Clemens pune la cale asasinarea lui. Odată cu dezgroparea tot mai multor resurse metalice, nivelul tehnologic crește, ajungându-se la reapariția armelor de foc. Deși meteoritul căzut este bogat în nichel și fier, Clemens are nevoie și de alte materiale pentru a-și construi vaporul, lucru pentru care începe să facă schimburi comerciale cu regatele vecine. Unul dintre acestea, condus de regele Ioan Fără-de-Țară, invadează teritoriul pe care se află Clemens și îl cucerește, dând naștere țării Parolando. În afară de acest lucru, Clemens are parte de un șoc neplăcut când sosește soția sa, în compania lui Cyrano de Bergerac. Deși este devastat de situație, Clemens se împrietenește cu Cyrano, care este unul dintre cei mai buni spadasini din lume. Parolando este atacat de un regat vecin, "Soul City", iar Ioan Fără-de-Țară îl trădează pe Clemens, furându-i vasul cu zbaturi Nu se închiriază, pe care acesta reușise să îl construiască în cele din urmă

The Green Odyssey is a relatively straightforward adventure story, involving an astronaut named Alan Green stranded on a primitive planet, where he is claimed as a gigolo by a duchess and is married to a slave woman. Upon hearing of two other stranded astronauts, he escapes from the duchess, and sets sail to find them. However, because of the peculiar geography of the planet, there is a vast expansive plain, instead of an ocean to cross. Green uses a ship equipped with large rolling pin-like wheels along the bottom to traverse the plains of this world. After his escape from the duchess he is followed by his slave woman wife and her children (one is his). There follow several fairly standard adventure plots with cannibals, pirates, floating islands (that turn out to be giant lawnmowers), and the deus ex machina, a female black cat named Lady Luck
