La acción narrada en Aura (1962), la novela de Carlos Fuentes a que me deseo referir (5), constituye aparentemente un proceso de reencuentro con la historia. El protagonista, Felipe Montero, un historiador de 27 años, se desplaza desde un espacio exterior y periférico, en el que prevalecen las apariencias superficiales y las máscaras -el de la moderna Ciudad de México, cotidiana, alienante- hacia otro espacio interior y central, en el que supuestamente descubre una realidad esencial- la Ciudad de México colonial, histórica, representada por la calle Donceles, en la que se encuentra la casa de la anciana Consuelo, con el número 815.(6) Sin embargo, si se lee la novela atendiendo a su elaboración simbólica, el mencionado reencuentro se traduce en una efectiva regresión en la que el pasado, del que es portadora la anciana Consuelo, se apodera del presente, representado por el joven historiador. Ni las hechicerías de aquélla ni la juventud de Felipe, son suficientes para revitalizar a una situación de encierro estéril, en la que el pasado, convocado por el presente, termina por apoderarse de éste último hasta identificarse con él. La imagen de la bruja metaforiza en Aura las contradicciones de la memoria histórica latinoamericana, especialmente el anquilosamiento que le produce su incapacidad de introspección. La historia que se relata en Aura, aunque vincula los poderes de la bruja con el conocimiento de la naturaleza y la búsqueda del amor eterno, conduce a los protagonistas a un estado de encierro, asfixia y esterilidad. La historia que conduce a esta situación es de amor: en ella dos amantes se vuelven a unir, superando las barreras del tiempo y de la muerte. Se la ha interpretado como la narración de una aventura interior, que puede ocurrir tanto en la imaginación de Felipe como en la de Consuelo. Quien propone que la historia no es otra cosa que un sueño de Consuelo, interpreta a este personaje como a una anciana demente a causa de su propia esterilidad y temor a la senectud, que en su delirio recuperaría a su amado por medio de la imaginación. Las dos interpretaciones se fundamentan en marcas textuales muy precisas que permiten atribuir el relato a uno u otro de los dos personajes. El epígrafe, tomado de La sorciére de Michelet, es uno de los elementos que inducen a afirmar que la historia narrada es producto de la imaginación de la anciana Consuelo: El hombre caza y lucha. La mujer intriga y sueña, es la madre de la fantasía, de los dioses. Posee la segunda visión, las alas que le permiten volar hacia el infinito del deseo y de la imaginación… Los dioses son como los hombres: nacen y mueren sobre el pecho de una mujer…

Eso dice el protagonista de uno de los nueve cuentos que integran esta obra, por donde Carolina Grau transitará como presencia sutil, como persona, como fantasma y como enigma, trazando siempre un fino halo de misterio

En este breve ensayo-reseña se pretenderá distinguir el leitmotiv dentro de su cuento Chac Mool: las reminiscencias prehispánicas y el pasado indígena, pulsiones constantes en el trabajo del escritor. Conscientes estamos que intentar aprehender las fuentes del discurso literario de Fuentes es una tarea titánica, ya que independientemente de la vastedad de su obra y de la densidad de sus historias, determinar las ideas o mociones de un autor tan prolífico es adentrarse dentro de un maremágnum que no admite clasificación. Por tal razón sólo me atreveré a esbozar ideas y sugerir motivos. Impulsos esenciales e innegables que nos permiten comprender el mundo representando y ficticio del autor. Fuentes no olvida, o al menos pretende no hacerlo, construye amalgamas que nos intuyen y justifican. Pensemos en el difuminado y nebuloso personaje Ixca Cienfuegos de La región más transparente, o en el Cristóbal Nonato, o en el misticismo de Aura o en La muerte de Artemio Cruz. En todos lados el escritor recurre a su herencia, aunque francamente en algunas ocasiones sus radiografías sociales parezcan más una especie de turismo sociológico o análisis de vitrina (Agua Quemada, Los años con Laura Díaz, Cambio de piel y La misma Región…). Sin embargo, la calidad de sus obras como su alta cota literaria es indiscutible, considero que tanto Cantar de ciegos como Los días enmascarados son libros excelentes. Iniciado como un cuadro de costumbres con el humor negro que descubriremos también en otros: la descripción de la muerte de la cruel Doña Emérita y su gata (gata significa también mujer de servicio), la mansión donde viven y sus macabros secretos se convierten en el núcleo del relato. `La buena compañía` se inicia en París, pero el protagonista se traslada a México, donde convivirá con dos extrañas tías en una no menos extraña mansión poblada de crueles fantasmas. Descubre su propia muerte, siendo niño, y Serena y Zenaida (las tías, también difuntas) cierran el relato de manera brillante, con un diálogo en el sótano donde se encuentran los féretros. Más explícito que Rulfo, el culto a la muerte, tópico mexicano, está presente no sólo en éste, sino en otros cuentos. El germen de `Calixta Brand` parece derivar de El retrato de Dorian Gray. Una vez más, la mansión en la que transcurre se convierte en el eje principal. Calixta escribe, el protagonista es un ejecutivo. El paso del amor al odio viene acompañado de la invalidez de la esposa. Pero el cuadro que se modifica, las fotografías que al borrarse presagian la muerte, constituirán los misterios por los que caminaremos sabiamente conducidos. El árabe de un oscuro cuadro va convirtiéndose en el retrato de un médico-jardinero que cuidará de la mujer, hasta convertirse en ángel y desaparecer volando, llevándosela. Fuentes convierte lo inverosímil en simbólico. También `La bella durmiente` se sitúa en México, aunque los orígenes y el significado del relato nos lleven a la Alemania nazi. La acción se inicia en Chihuahua, en los años de Pancho Villa, si bien el protagonista se sitúa en la actualidad. Natural de Enden, Baur mantiene su racista espíritu germánico, aunque su cuerpo se haya convertido en una ruina. Médico de profesión, es llamado a visitar a su mujer, con la que se casó a los 55 años. La visita se convertirá en una pesadilla que retrotraerá a los personajes a los tiempos de los campos de exterminio. No podía faltar `Vlad`, una historia de vampiros. Eloy Zurinaga pide a su colaborador, el licenciado Navarro, que busque una mansión para un amigo que ha de llegar a México con su hija. La vida matrimonial de Navarro había discurrido plácidamente. Su esposabuscará la casa apropiada, en la que hará construir un túnel y tapiar todas las ventanas. Vlad, el conde centroeuropeo, no será otro que Drácula. Carlos Fuentes ha logrado, sirviéndose de materiales tópicos populares, construir relatos que trascienden la anécdota. No es casual que estas historias de misterio, de horror y muerte se hayan convertido en mitos universales. Fuentes los ha mexicanizado. Ha descrito de manera ejemplar y sobria paisajes de su patria y se ha servido de mecanismos elementales para convertirlos en historias cotidianas y confeccionar una literatura brillante y divertida, irracional, de amplio espectro, de gran nivel, como no podía ser menos

Es una obra mágica e intrigante, una novela sobre la memoria, el recuerdo, y el olvido. En donde indaga en el dilemma de, unas veces revivir el pasado y otras, sepultarlo. El tema narrativo se podría explicar en pocas líneas: `Es la historia de amor de una mujer que se enamora de un hombre que no está en su tiempo ni en su espacio y que debe buscar en otro tiempo y en otro espacio, así de simple es la historia`, en palabras del autor. Sin embargo, muy apesar de lo que el autor afirma, la historia que relata el libro es compleja, y en realidad son dos historias que se unen al final. Por un lado, tenemos la vida en el siglo XX, de un jubilado director de orquesta, Gabriel Atlan-Ferrara, en la que se cuenta su discurrir profesional y sentimental con una soprano, Inez de Prada. Por otra parte, el relato de una pareja de una etapa muy diferente, la Prehistoria, con sus problemas para sobrevivir y una gran violencia que les viene encima. Algunos personajes de esta segunda historia pasan a la primera, y de esta manera se crea una historia muy atractiva para cualquier lector. Esta obra como en la gran mayoría de los libros de Carlos Fuentes, nos entretiene, pero también nos obliga a pensar. No es una obra que solamente irradie belleza por medio de sus palabras y recursos literarios, sino que desprende ideas sobre los temas más importantes para el ser humano: el amor, la muerte, y la violencia, entre otros

Carlos Fuentes w tej niedużej, ale fascynującej bogactwem nastrojów i przemyśleń opowieści, mówi, że "wszystko, co ukryte, czeka po prostu na nasze uważne spojrzenie". Pozornie banalny romans, stanowiący główny wątek powieści, eksploduje dramatyzmem, skłaniając czytelnika do zastanowienia się nad zagadką mijającego czasu i odradzającej się w kolejnych wcieleniach miłości. Zagłębiając się w "podwójny", stworzony przez Fuentesa świat, znajdujemy odpowiedź na pytania, które przed nami stawia. Ale może nie będzie to odpowiedź jednoznaczna, lecz inna dla każdego z nas? Powieść zaczyna się jakby od środka – głównego bohatera poznajemy jako 93-letniego starca (niegdyś cenionego dyrygenta), wpatrującego się w pewien przedmiot, stanowiący ważny rekwizyt w całej książce. Jest to kryształowa pieczęć (autor opisuje ją dokładnie), będąca czymś w rodzaju amuletu czy symbolu doskonałości (jest okrągła i gładka). Stary dyrygent nie potrafi się bez niej obejść, chociaż z całą pewnością nie służy ona do pieczętowania czegokolwiek. Motyw pieczęci przewija się przez całą książkę. Główny wątek fabularny powieści to historia niespełnionej miłości dyrygenta i utalentowanej śpiewaczki o imieniu Inez. Historię tę poznajemy poprzez retrospekcję. Oto lata II wojny światowej, Anglia, bombardowany Londyn. Dyrygent (wówczas młody, ale już sławny) wywozi piękną Inez do nadmorskiej miejscowości, gdzie jednak miłosna przygoda nie znajdzie spełnienia, natomiast czytelnik dowiaduje się o istnieniu tajemniczej "trzeciej osoby". Jednocześnie z tym wątkiem pojawia się drugi: opowieść o związku dwojga ludzi z prehistorycznej przeszłości – będzie się ona przeplatać z historią dwojga poznanych już bohaterów. Dyrygent i śpiewaczka, po latach sukcesów artystycznych, spotykają się tylko raz, w 19 lat po pamiętnym (i na dobrą sprawę, niezrozumiałym) rozstaniu. Po wspólnym występie – jest to "Potępienie Fausta" Berlioza widzą się już tylko po to, aby się pożegnać i stwierdzić, że nie byli sobie przeznaczeni. Książka Fuentesa zadziwia nieoczekiwanymi chwytami, nagłą zmianą stylistyki i nastrojów. Wielki urok ma też subtelna analiza wątków miłosnych. Ważne miejsce w powieści zajmuje muzyka. W tle wciąż obecny jest motyw ze wspomnianego utworu Berlioza, analizowanego w ciekawy sposób. Na końcowych stronach książki żegnamy się ze starym dyrygentem, który, wiedząc, że niedługo umrze, wraca myślą do Inez i… kryształowej pieczęci
