Piekło w stylu Sartre'a No to sobie redaktor pojechał po bandzie – być może taka myśl zaświtała w umyśle czytelnika tej recenzji, który zobaczył był jej tytuł i sprawdził, jakiej książki dotyczy (lub też sprawdził był jakiej książki dotyczy, a następnie zobaczył tytuł…). A jednak – skojarzenie Joe Hilla, a dokładnie jego najnowszej powieści pod tytułem Rogi, ze słynnym stwierdzeniem francuskiego myśliciela jest całkiem dorzeczne. Staje się zaś jeszcze bardziej na miejscu, gdy dopowiem, że Rogi nie są raczej typowym horrorem, za co zresztą autorowi się oberwało od co bardziej dogmatycznych recenzentów. Zaczyna się od wysokiego tonu. Pewnego ranka niejaki Ignatius Perrish budzi się na mocnym kacu, któremu towarzyszy jakże częsty w takich przypadkach stan zagubienia i niepewności. Jest pewien, że w nocy narobił głupstw, ale nic nie pamięta. W lustrze zauważa z przerażeniem, że wyrosły mu rogi… To jednak dopiero początek zmian zachodzących w naszym bohaterze. Po pewnym czasie spostrzega, że wszyscy napotkani ludzie zaczynają się przed nim otwierać, jakby chcieli wyspowiadać się z najmroczniejszych sekretów i pragnień. Dotyczy to także jego najbliższej rodziny. Tu trzeba zauważyć, że Ignatius jest w swym miasteczku osobą, delikatnie mówiąc, niezbyt popularną. Rok wcześniej zgwałcono i brutalnie zamordowano jego dziewczynę, a mimo braku formalnego oskarżenia wszyscy uznali, że dokonał tego właśnie on… Dlaczego Rogi nie są klasycznym horrorem? Bo z jednej strony autor nie epatuje tu czytelników przerażającymi opisami krwawych jatek (chociaż psychologiczne wiwisekcje są moim zdaniem naprawdę mroczne), a z drugiej zadziwiająco głębokie są tezy, które stawia. Tu już nie chodzi tylko i wyłącznie o przejrzystą konstatację, że najwięcej cierpienia czeka nas nie ze strony wymyślonych demonów, ale zwykłych ludzi. To właśnie przecież miał między innymi na myśli Jean-Paul Sartre, mówiąc: żadnych palenisk nie ma, piekło to inni… Ignatius Perrish doświadczający na kartach powieści iście kafkowskiej przemiany, jawi się nam jako bohater pozytywny, na przekór czarnej legendzie, jaką owiana jest postać diabła, i nieco przez kontrast z osobą swego głównego antagonisty, czyli prawdziwego mordercy jego ukochanej. Nagle wszystko staje na głowie, prawdziwym staje się wymyślony domek na drzewie, stanowiący w powieści dość czytelny symbol, a my przyjmujemy optykę autora. To ewidentne – Joe Hill nie zamierzał napisać horroru. Jednak ze względu na swoje wcześniejsze dokonania, a zwłaszcza to, czyim jest synem, powieść została umieszczona na półce ze stosownym napisem, w szufladce katalogu nieznającego żadnych odstępstw od normy. To jednak tak naprawdę powieść psychologiczna, być może za często uciekająca w dygresje i retrospekcje, przez co gubi swój rytm (ale u Stephena Kinga ten grzech także się powtarza). Być może chwilami akcja zaczyna znienacka trącić harlequinem, tracić spoistość i formę. Jednak po dobrym Pudełku w kształcie serca i świetnym zbiorze opowiadań Demony XX wieku można było tylko powielać wcześniejsze dokonania, albo spróbować czegoś nowego. I to jest właśnie nowy Joe Hill, a przy tym naprawdę ciekawy kawałek prozy
