Jest czymś więcej putBan(34); Bohaterowie powieści, Harriet i David Lovattowie, są idealną parą. W szalonych latach 60. postanawiają żyć na uboczu świata. Kupują ogromny dom pod Londynem i chcą mieć ogromną rodzinę. "Co najmniej sześcioro dzieci" – mówią. I wbrew rozsądkowi i możliwościom finansowym realizują swój plan bardzo szybko. Bena, agresywnego odludka, nikt nie lubi. I ta nienawiść przerzuca się na jego matkę, bo to ona urodziła odmieńca. Bohaterka wielokrotnie przytacza opowieści o prymitywnych plemionach, które piętnowały matki "innych" dzieci. Definicja "inności" to drugi ważny wątek powieści Lessing. Brytyjka w niezwykle przejmujący sposób zastanawia się nad granicami normalności. Zadaje sobie pytanie, czy rzeczywiście większość ma zawsze rację. Bo większość (nauczyciele, lekarze, psycholodzy) widzą w Benie zwykłe dziecko, jedynie fizycznie rozwinięte nad swój wiek i nieco zamknięte. To Harriet, a za nią reszta rodziny, sądzi, że w piątym dziecku jest coś nienormalnego. Bohaterowie mówią o sobie, że są staroświeccy – początkowo wydaje się to ich zaletą. Ale ich staroświeckość ma też inne, brutalne oblicze. Jak w zamierzchłych czasach rodzina bez skrupułów, bez skierowania lekarskiego oddaje odmieńca do zakładu dla psychicznie chorych, by tam powoli umarł. Kiedy Harriet łamie niepisaną umowę, że nikt nie będzie o niego więcej pytał i decyduje się żyć dla Bena, musi odrzucić resztę swojej rodziny, która nie akceptuje jej decyzji. Tym samym musi zrezygnować z życia w świecie, w który wierzyła. Trudno o bardziej dramatyczny dylemat – wybierać między swoimi dziećmi, decydować, które bardziej się kocha. Wielki format pisarstwa Lessing widać zwłaszcza w ostatnich scenach książki, kiedy Harriet widzi w telewizji swojego już dorosłego syna stojącego w tłumie podczas demonstracji. I nadal nie potrafi odpowiedzieć, kim on jest i czy naprawdę jest "inny".
